Understanding Automotive Issues

Welcome readers! My name is Rab. If you do not understand your auto, you will have no way to identify or repair your car. I didn't use to have the first clue how to repair a car. However, all of that changed when I decided to attend a local mechanical college so I could take an auto repair course. The course was pretty intense as I was a complete beginner but I learnt a great deal. Since completing the course, I have been working on my car to repair and improve it. I hope you enjoy reading my new blog!

Three Pointers To Consider Before Proceeding With Bullbar Installation

by Samantha Nichols

The end of the year is a time of year when a lot of people head out on the Australian roads. Whether it is to visit family members or just to visit somewhere new for a holiday, there is plenty of Australia to explore. As someone who is considering having bullbars installed on their new vehicle before travelling this summer, consider these three pointers before you go ahead and purchase them.

Bullbar Material

Bullbars are commonly made of steel, and some bullbars are heavier than others. The weight of the bullbar is an important consideration, because they add to the overall weight of the car. The heavier the bullbars are, the more you are going to notice a difference in increased running costs. In particular, you will use more fuel to move your heavier vehicle. You can purchase plastic composite bullbars that still offer the strength you need in the event of an animal strike but weigh less than their steel counterpart.

Choose Friendly-To-Pedestrian Designs

The main point of having a bullbar fitted is because you want to protect your vehicle when you are on stretches of road where assistance is not readily available if you hit a large animal. However, unless you plan to remove them after your summer vacation, then the bullbars will remain on your vehicle while you drive around town on your return. In the unfortunate event that you hit a pedestrian during your town driving, then the bullbars are going to damage that person. Ask the seller to show you designs which are pedestrian friendly.

Legal Bullbars

You do not want to void your insurance policy by fitting bullbars that do not comply with legal standards. So, before you purchase any bullbar, make sure the one you like complies with the following legal requirements:

  • your vehicle manufacturer certifies the bullbar is suitable for the make and model of vehicle you own
  • vehicle lights and driver's vision are not impaired once the bullbar is fitted
  • the bullbar does not have sharp angles which could injure pedestrians
  • the bullbar cannot interfere with the way your airbag system works, and the bullbar provider must be able to certify this to be the case.

If you have any further questions about the bullbars you like, talk to the person who is tasked with doing the bullbar installation. They can answer any concerns you have and will have the bullbars fitted onto your vehicle well before your holiday travel commences.
