Being Prepared for Anything
Many mechanical problems are foreseeable, and you'll often notice tell-tale warning signs before the component in question completely fails. Of course, in this situation, you should seek out the services of a qualified mechanic to ensure that you are not stranded on the side of the road. However, issues can materialise out of the blue, and even the best prepared could still be sidelined. Yet this is not a good position to be in as it can leave you and the occupants of the vehicle in a vulnerable position.
The Perils of a Hard Shoulder
When authorities design highways and motorways, they often include a "hard shoulder" meant for emergencies. In most cases, you will be able to coast to a halt if your vehicle is completely dead or simply manoeuvre to the side to get out of the way. However, this is a potentially dangerous situation. After all, some drivers lose concentration when they are on a motorway and moving at a consistent speed with no changes in direction. They may be tempted to look at their smartphone or take their eyes off the road, and even a small deviation could cause them to crash into your stranded vehicle.
Moving out of Harms Way
This is why it is important to evacuate all vehicle occupants should you find yourself on the hard shoulder of a motorway or divided highway. Make sure they exit the vehicle from the side nearest to the grass verge and then move behind a solid object (like the crash barrier).
Calling for Help
Next, call an emergency towing service as soon as possible. They will prioritise this job and send someone out with a tow vehicle to get your car or truck out of harm's way. Often, they will be able to accommodate you and your passengers within the cab so you can all move away from this potentially dangerous environment.
Crafting a Plan
Always keep the number of an emergency towing service in your phone and handy. You will know who to call if you find yourself in this situation.
